Tree Trimming & Pruning
Good pruning makes a tree stronger, safer, and longer-lived. Bad pruning, such as topping, can ruin it. A certified arborist knows which branches to remove and when.
Common trimming jobs
- Removing dead, broken, or crossing branches
- Raising the canopy over driveways, sidewalks, and lawns
- Clearing branches off roofs and away from gutters
- Thinning dense crowns to cut wind load before storm season
- Structural pruning on young trees so they grow strong
Oak wilt and timing
Oak wilt is a fatal fungal disease spread by beetles to fresh wounds in spring and early summer. If you have oaks, schedule pruning in the dormant season. A good arborist will tell you if your job should wait.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to prune trees in Wisconsin?
Late winter, while trees are dormant, is ideal for most species. For oaks, the Wisconsin DNR recommends avoiding pruning from April through July to reduce the risk of oak wilt.
How often should trees be trimmed?
Young trees benefit from structural pruning every 2–3 years. Mature trees usually need attention every 3–5 years, or after storm damage.
